Mr. Cebu 2009

One of my favorite contestants in this year’s Mr. Cebu contest is Filipino-German Siegfred Schmidt. This 22-year-old looker from Bulacao, Cebu City is one of the more visible and in-demand male models in the southern city. He lists himself as 5’10”-tall and a graduate of Tourism at the University of San Jose – Recoletos in Cebu City. His experience in male pageants, e.g. Hari ng Negros and Mossimo Bikini Summit [Cebu prelims], is making him the frontrunner in the annual event, which will have its finals night on 28 November 2009. To vote for Siegfred in the pageant, you must be a Smart or Talk & Text subscriber, and text MRCEBU HELP to 9977 for the instructions. Click also here for their website to get more info.

Paddling Through

I was finally able to watch Sagwan, that controversial movie that put the University of the Philippines at loggerheads with the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board [MTRCB]. For a time, gay-themed movies with a full heaping of penis shots were freely shown at the UP Film Center. Until this indie flick came along, and the MTRCB took notice. One of the actors there, in fact the lead, is Ryan Dungo – a bikini contest veteran who made a bold and hard dedication to his craft in Sagwan. How did you find Sagwan?

Wendell Still Hot

Bench Body model and actor Wendell Ramos [right] returns to prime time as a leading man via the soap Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit of GMA-7’s Sine Novela series. It’s a re-working of the 80s movie of the same title, about a woman who aims for the sky and loses everything in the process. Wendell Ramos plays the male lead, a rich party boy who eventually goes broke and turns to modeling and, uh, prostitution. Photo above is one of the scenes from the series where he does Bench shorts in a fashion show with young model Lem Pelayo.

Star Stuck

Oh no, GMA-7 is launching yet again its “reality-based artista search” Starstruck, a talent show designed to look for new actors who can be potential moneymakers for the station. Which probably means there will be another group or batch of wannabees who will crowd out the station’s existing stable of actors, artists and singers. The thing is, the past winners have not yet had their due and methinks this new edition is totally not yet timely. Take for example Mike Tan, the grand winner in Season 2. He has done practically everything in the book – act, dance, sing and strip. But it seems he is not getting popular enough. He is resigned to relative humiliation by doing bit and supporting roles now in his home studio. The others in his batch are not as lucky as Mike Tan. They have now faded into oblivion. If only GMA-7 put more time and effort in developing these young upstarts, rather than launch another search.

Anderson in Town

As the other Brazilians of Japanese ancestry are making it big in Manila, twenty-one-year-old Anderson Schneider is quietly trying his luck in the big city for modeling opportunities. This tall Brazilian model has appeared in a tv commercial and print ad for Century Tuna. Too, he was in the Bench Blackout Fashion Show held a year ago. If you want to marvel at this South American hunk, he can be seen working out – sweaty and all – at the Gold’s Gym in Makati City on most days.

Oi, Lemuelle!

Oi! Model boy! So, you are now on tv eh? Good for you. I know it has always been your dream to be on the telly – famous and all. After all, you are cute and tall and a male model with confidence. So what’s this tv series you are doing again? Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit. A re-doing of the 1980s movie about a social climbing woman. I heard the male lead’s a society boy-turned-destitute-guy, who resorts to escort services. That’s Wendell Ramos. And I’m guessing this is the scene where you guys do some ramp modeling as a front for the escort services. Nice one! Good luck in your career, Lemuelle. I mean it.

Gerald Enthralls

Popular young actor Gerald Anderson continues to soar. After the prime time success of his soap Tayong Dalawa, he is busy with his Tiagong Akyat series and another Your Song show in ABS-CBN, his home studio. Too, he is slated to do heavy drama [read: acting vehicle worthy of an award] through the long-running show Maalaala Mo Kaya. Gerald will play a young man with GTS or Tourette Syndrome. It’s a difficult role, actually, and Gerald is hoping that he can deliver on this one.

Harry Latest

These are amateur photos sent in by a reader who wants to remain anonymous. Apparently these are latest pictures [a bit hazy] of erstwhile actor Harry Chua a.k.a. Harry Laurel, who appeared in the pioneering gay flick, Ang Lalake sa Parola. Private citizen Harrison Chua was reportedly spotted in a show organized locally, which show required him to wear briefs. And while he may not be fit as a starving model, he is still cute and cuddly as a bear cub.

What is the taste of corned tuna? Dingdong Dantes is endorsing one. And now, Derek Ramsay is advocating it. The thing’s supposed to taste like corned beef, except that it’s fish and apparently healthier than the cow meat version. Anyways, Derek is pushing for it and I might just have to try this one out. Besides, unlike Dingdong who appears in a rival ad in white shirt and pants, Derek goes all out shirtless. In fact, he has lots of them billboards in EDSA posing as traffic hazard.

In Your Face!

So this is the picture of Aljur in busy EDSA. It’s a huge billboard of local clothing brand Bench, which is pushing for its jeans line. A bit distracting considering that Aljur is shirtless, showing off his assets [and pits] in broad daylight. On another note, his first major movie flopped at the tills but GMA-7 is not about to give up just yet. He may be the new leading man of his home studio and his launching film bombed at the box office probably because of the natural disasters that hit Manila on opening day. Or maybe his leading lady looks like the President of the Philippines. I say ditch the bitch and find a suitable partner for this promising young actor!
