At the 2004 MTV Fashionista Model Search, a then 18-year old John Daryl Rose
competed against the likes of Rocky Salumbides
, AJ Winkler, Victor Basa
, Alec van Dierendonck
, Dennis McIrvin [of Provoq] and a host of other mestizos.
It was such a bumper crop of male models competing for the top plum and right to represent the Philippines in the Top Model of the World competition. Unfortunately, John Daryl Rose did not win but said contest opened doors for this 6’3″-tall stunner. John Daryl has modeled for the top designers in the Philippines and has appeared in tv commercials and print ads.
My favorite Mossimo twinkie boy Haroun Morales
has apparently buffed up after the Mossimo Bikini Summit. Although he did not win the annual event, Haroun was undaunted. Aside from modeling assignments that he received after the competition, 23-year old native of Las Pinas City is also busy with his studies at the De La Salle University – Dasmarinas. Shy and bashful during the contest, maybe Haroun Morales can enter next year’s edition with more boldness, as Mossimo Bikini Summit invites back previous contestants.
At the recent Bodyheat Model Search 2007, sponsored by the avant-garde designer group, Fashion Artists Foundation, one mestizoid stood out among the batch of contestants in the pre-pageant activities. Bikini contest spectators thought that the tall 25-year old fresh model from Quezon City, Joaquin Casado
would eventually walk off with the title in the summer’s last bikini pageant. Unfortunately, he finished first runner-up to a more experienced model Marco Odejar
was one of the top 6 semi-finalists in the recently-concluded Mossimo Bikini Summit.
He was also the winner in the Style Eyecatchers Model Search Leg 6 edition. As winner of that leg, he gets to compete in the Grand Finals which will be held on August 11, 2007. This early, Aaron Canlas has been flagged as winner-most-likely in the innovative model search, due to his height, bone structure, and eloquence [he, reportedly, was born and raised in the Old Dominion State, Virginia].
Twenty-four year old model Danny Marco Odejar is this year’s winner of the Bodyheat Model Search held at The Block, SM North Edsa. The 6′-tall stunner from Laguna bested 11 other sexy males to take home the prize in the bikini contest. Bodyheat Model Search is an annual contest sponsored by the Fashion Artists Foundation, a group of young designers in Manila.
Allan Mercado Farcon is a 23-year old part-time model from Binan, Laguna. This 5’8″-tall looker finished his BS Electronics and Communications Engineering course from the AMA Computer University. He has modeled for the print ads and ramp shows of name brands Rough Rider Jeans, Carter briefs, Walker underwear, Dickies, Lanjary and Safari Collection. He has done bit roles on teevee shows too.
Dave Devon Rebolledo
is a 5’10-tall model, slowly making his mark in the modeling scene. As one of Cosmopolitan [Philippines] magazine’s 69 most eligible bachelors, Dave has also appeared at the Cosmo Bachelors Bash of 2006. He is at present a finalist for the Grand Finals of the Style Eyecatchers Model Search to be held on August11 2007.

During dinner, my friend UPH, who has finally put up his site [ http://www.ultimatepinoyhunks.net
] after the Ram Sagad saga, was diss-cussing with me recently how some D-list models classify themselves, conceitedly, as “Class A.” The subject matter came about after UPH recalled how one wannabe model [D.] he purposely met suddenly self-proclaimed that he is a Class A model, together with A., G., and a host of others I could only tick from the back of my mind’s D-list. And then again, I do not even remember the bigger-league male mannequins calling themselves “Class A models.” They are simply called models. Top models.
Finally, it dawned into smart aleck UPH that in Greenhills Shopping Center, home of the counterfeit goods, the vendors classify their wares from Class A imitation to Class D crock. Say, for example, there is a Class A Rolex in Greenhills – which means that it is a precise replica, but still a replica; the Class D would be crass-fake big-time. And it all made sense.
And so, we finally understood what that wannabe model was saying all along. Since they cannot go a bit higher and join the ranks of the Iagos, Victors and Dereks and all the models shown above [representing a select few of the top male mannequins], the Daves, Alizons, Guinesses and a multitude of others go a step nearer and call themselves respectably as “Class A models.”
Our concerns, precisely.
Whenever I see 6’2″-tall model Rocky Salumbides
i feel like humming The Crimea’s “Lottery Winners on Acid.” That is, I go weirdly insane like a lottery winner on acid. Although I am quite partial to the cutesy Chinaman pale boys [e.g. Carlos Concepcion], the Philippines’ male supermodel is one of my dark-skinned favorites. Of course, everybody knows his humble beginnings [street food vendor, Trinity College varsity basketball player, struggling model] to supermodel status. This 25-year old model is also known for his professionalism, competency and modesty, that is why he is one of the most in-demand male mannequins in the fashion runways of Manila, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Twenty-three-year old Arthur Manlutac
works as a technical support agent in a big BPO corporation somewhere between Ayala and Gil Puyat Avenues in Makati City. He is originally from Tarlac City, but he studied at the Mapua Institute of Technology-Makati campus. A part-time model, this hunky squirt has been turning heads in his building [and area].
