Rewind to August 2006: The Philippine Idol auditions were underway and the judges were in awe at a tall and handsome young man from an international school. He can sing a mean power ballad and he was through to the next round. Midway through the Theater Round [equivalent to the Hollywood Week of its American counterpart], the young man, in tears, tells the judges that he’s not going through the process anymore as he has to go to school in Switzerland – at the Glion Institute of Higher Education in Bulle, to be exact. The judges were tsk–tsking in disappointment for surely they could have found a star in this charismatic 19-year-old singer.
Fast forward, last Sunday of May 2009: The Bench Fashion Show was being staged at the SMX Convention Center and people were second-guessing the identity of this tall cutie in fully-packed mulberry briefs. It’s none other than the crying kid at Philippine Idol approximately 3 years ago – Markki Strøm, now 22 years old and back on local shores to pursue his dream of being a singer and an actor [he’s a triathlete, too]. Well, of course, Bench noticed the fine mestizo features of this Fil-Norwegian lad and cast him in its major show. Markki’s star is definitely getting brighter from now on.
